UK Foundation launched!

UK charity launched!

It’s been just over ten months since I first arrived to Zimbabwe and, while times are a bit uncertain at the moment, I’ve learnt an enormous amount from the people here, about the way they live and what their daily struggles are. These struggles have intensified with the stalling of tourism and, by the persistant drought in the area….although we had a short rain shower last night which was a treat. Zimbabwe’s economic situation is extremely difficult, complex and unstable and it’s been tough for me to witness and try to navigate. I’ve also learnt about the wildlife, the multifaceted issues related to conservation and why it’s so incredibly important to raise awareness when it comes to wildlife protection and community development. No matter what happens to me personally, I am keen to stay connected to the people and wildlife here and be part of the efforts to protect the communities and nature that make this place so magical.

With that in mind, I’m excited to say that, given my experience, I’ve founded the Camelthorn Foundation, which, overseen by three brilliant Trustees will hopefully provide support, even if only minimal, to areas where both wildlife and livelihoods need to be sustained.

and please do get in touch with any ideas, comments or thoughts!

One of the Foundation’s first campaigns hopes to supply teachers and children in rural wildlife areas in Zimbabwe, and in particular those along the southern border of Hwange National Park, with curriculum textbooks. Awareness of the importance of conservation and general education plays a crucial role in safeguarding wildlife and opening people up to different socio-economic opportunities. Without education, there is no hope for true community engagement in wildlife conservation – education must start in the classroom and with the right resources.

We’re raising funds to buy textbooks from Oxford University Press Southern Africa, who are selling them for a cost price of £1 per book. Working with partners on the ground, including Imvelo Safari Lodges, these textbooks will be distributed to schools and children who live in rural, isolated and impoverished communities near or with wildlife.
